Commissioned by President Suharto’s government, the monument was presented as a gift to mark the 20th anniversary of East Timor's integration as an Indonesian province, a political move largely intended to appease the region's deeply Catholic population and soften the regime's image. Designed by Indonesian architect Mochamad Syaililla, the statue's copper body was constructed in pieces in Bandung before being shipped to Dili for assembly. While the local Catholic Church was initially highly skeptical of the project—viewing it primarily as political propaganda—the statue underwent a profound cultural shift following East Timor’s independence in 2002. Today, it has shed its controversial political origins to become a cherished national landmark, representing faith, resilience, and a vibrant tourist destination for locals and travelers alike.
