About this operator

Whether you’re in Timor Leste for a brief stay or an extended one, booking an adventure with Compass Diving can turn your visit into a memory you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Compass Diving offers exclusive adventure dive holidays on the pristine island of Ataúro. With local help and permission they have opened an eco-lodge in Beloi (Ataúro Beach Eco-Lodge). With the establishment of this camp, Compass opened a door for the local community to learn about hospitality, tourism, and conservation. Their work with Conservation International has also aided in creating marine protected areas around the waters of Ataúro, ensuring that these pristine reefs will be around for future generations to discover and maintain. By diving with Compass Diving, you’ll not only dive these coral reefs, but also help to ensure the future of the island through sustainable ecotourism.

As a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort, Compass also runs a wide range of accredited dive courses (starting from a beginner level) as well as various scuba adventures. Ataúro options range from one-day dive trips to extended stays at their Ataúro Beach Eco-Lodge.

Tomé picked us up at 7am sharp. Two snorkel stops were both beyond what we'd hoped — turtles on the second wall. BBQ on the beach was the best meal of our trip.

Sunrise on the summit was unforgettable. Guide carried tea up for us. Hatu-Builico homestay was warm and the food was great. Booked one more tour while we were still up there.

Long drive but worth every minute. Jaco itself is empty white sand. Crossing in a tiny fishing boat. Lunch at Tutuala. Will tell every backpacker we meet.

Loved the cupping with the cooperative. Mountain pousada lunch was a highlight. One stop was a bit rushed at the end — but overall a great window into Timor coffee.

FAQ

Can't find what you need? WhatsApp the operator — reply in ~12 min.

Yes — free pickup and drop-off for any hotel in central Dili. Outside central Dili we charge a small driver fee, please ask when you book.

Transport in air-conditioned vehicles, all entrance fees, water + snacks, an English- and Tetum-speaking guide, and any equipment specific to the tour (snorkel gear, life jackets, dive gear where applicable). Lunches are noted on each tour card.

Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, swimwear under your clothes, a small towel, and shoes you can get wet on snorkel/dive trips. For Ramelau and other treks bring a warm layer and head-torch — the night gets cold above 2,500 m.

We reschedule for free if conditions are unsafe (rough crossings, lightning on summit days). Light rain alone is not a cancellation — Timor weather flips fast and the day usually opens up.

Most day-tours run from age 6+. Mt Ramelau is 12+ because of the altitude. Dive trips follow PADI minimums. Kids under 12 are half price on the snorkel and island tours — ask at booking.

SOTCoin is the Stays of Timor loyalty token — you earn 5% back on every booking, and can pay any portion of a tour with it at 1:1 USD. Cash on tour day is also fine.

Tour terms (AGB)

  • 01 Minimum group size for a tour to depart is shown on each card. If we cancel a tour for under-bookings you get a full refund or a free reschedule.
  • 02 Maximum group size is also shown on each card. We will not exceed it; if a tour fills up you can join the waitlist on the next departure.
  • 03 Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Inside 48h, 50% of the tour fee is held; inside 12h, no refund — but we can move you to another date for a small admin fee.
  • 04 Bad-weather policy: we reschedule for free if conditions are unsafe (rough seas, lightning at altitude). Light rain alone does not cancel a tour.
  • 05 Fitness disclaimer: hike-based tours require basic fitness — Mt Ramelau is strenuous, Jaco is easy. If you have a medical condition please tell us in the booking notes so we can advise you honestly.
  • 06 Liability: by booking you accept Timor-Leste's road, sea, and mountain conditions are different from your home country. Operators carry public-liability cover, but you remain responsible for your own personal travel insurance.
