About
Compass Diving is a family-run PADI dive resort in Timor-Leste, diving around Dili and on the reefs of Atauro Island. The family has worked in Timor-Leste since 1999; the first boat started dive charters to Atauro in 2005, and Compass became a PADI Dive Resort in 2010.
From the booking office on the Dili beachfront and the Compass Atauro Eco-Lodge in Beloi, Compass runs PADI courses from Discover Scuba Diving to Divemaster, guided dives, whale-watching tours in the pygmy blue whale season (October–November), private boat charters on its own fleet, and island transfers. Classes are limited to four students per instructor.
Atauro sits in the Coral Triangle. A 2016 marine survey requested by Conservation International recorded the highest overall coral-fish diversity per area surveyed in the world. Compass helped create marine protected areas around the island, including a tara bandu no-fishing zone at Adara.

A 3.5-hour cruise on the Sundance catamaran to look for pygmy blue whales on their yearly migration past Timor-Leste (October–November). Saturdays and Sundays, departing 8 am or 3 pm. Your own speedboat for 3 hours in the waters around Dili in the whale season (October–November). Daily, departing 8 am or 3 pm. Up to 6 adults plus 2 children under 15. Child friendly; guests stay on board throughout. Extra hours US$200 per hour.

A 6-hour trip from Dili (7 am – 1 pm) with a whale seeker on board. When the chance arises you slip into the water for a passive snorkel near the whales — mask, fins and snorkel only, no scuba or weights. Maximum 4 people per boat. A 1.5-hour briefing before the tour dates is compulsory. Whale encounters and swims are not guaranteed.
