Praia de Beloi / Tasi Beloi

Beloi is the welcoming heart of Atauro Island, greeting visitors with a sweep of powder-soft white sand framed by clear turquoise shallows and swaying coconut palms. Just beyond the shallows, the reef drops into deep blue depths that host breathtaking underwater life. The vibe is wonderfully tranquil, with eco-lodges constructed from natural timber and thatched palm fronds set right along the shore.

History

The story of this place

Beloi is historically an indigenous fishing community whose lives have been tied to the sea for generations. In 2016, a survey led by marine biologist Dr. Mark Erdmann revealed an average of 253 reef fish species per site around Atauro—surpassing the previous global record holder in West Papua. Community-based Tara Bandu customary marine reserves have helped preserve these pristine waters.
