About this place

Monumento de Lifau

Set along a wide, manicured waterfront esplanade west of Pante Macassar, the Lifau Monument is one of Timor-Leste’s most impressive commemorative landmarks. Dominated by a full-scale bronze caravel ship populated with statues of Portuguese friars, sailors, and Timorese liurais (chiefs), the site commemorates the pivotal cultural encounter that shaped Timor-Leste’s unique Catholic, Lusophone identity.

In August 1515, Portuguese navigators arrived in Lifau, which became the first European settlement on Timor and the colonial capital of Portuguese Timor until 1769, when attacks by Topasse forces compelled the Portuguese governor to relocate the capital east to Dili. In 2015, the government unveiled this monumental memorial for the 500th anniversary.
