Mercado Municipal de Baucau

With its sweeping symmetrical colonnades, circular pavilions, and striking pastel-yellow and white livery, the Mercado Municipal is Baucau’s undisputed signature landmark. Perched on a terrace overlooking a lush jungle ravine, its open courtyards and graceful archways evoke an era of grand Mediterranean civic planning adapted to the tropics.

Inaugurated in October 1932 under Portuguese Mayor Armando Eduardo Pinto Correia, the Mercado Municipal was designed as the central economic and civic forum of Portuguese Timor's eastern province. Heavily damaged during the 1999 violence, it was meticulously restored in 2014 to its full colonial splendor.
