Pousada de Baucau / Hotel Flamboyan

Perched like a flamingo-pink palace above the emerald valley of Old Baucau, the Pousada de Baucau is a living monument to mid-century Portuguese colonial style. With its graceful shuttered windows, high-ceilinged lounge, and terrace restaurant catching cool coastal breezes, it remains the most iconic heritage lodge in eastern Timor.

History

The story of this place

Built in the 1950s under Portuguese rule as the 'Pousada de Santiago', the hotel was designed to accommodate travelers arriving via Baucau's international airport (then the main international gateway to Portuguese Timor). During the Indonesian occupation, it was renamed Hotel Flamboyan before being restored and renamed Pousada de Baucau post-independence.
