Cemitério de Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz Cemetery is one of the most solemn, emotionally resonant historical sites in Timor-Leste. Behind its ornate iron gates, an astonishing density of pastel-colored stone crypts, crucifixes, and blooming bougainvillea creates an intimate labyrinth of remembrance. A visit here is essential for understanding the extraordinary courage that won the Timorese people their freedom.

History

The story of this place

On November 12, 1991, thousands of Timorese youths joined a memorial procession for murdered student Sebastião Gomes. Indonesian military forces opened fire without warning inside the walled cemetery, killing more than 250 unarmed civilians. British journalist Max Stahl secretly filmed the massacre and smuggled the video out, showing the world the brutal reality of the occupation.
