Igreja de Santo António de Motael

With its graceful whitewashed bell tower, red-tiled roof, and serene seaside courtyard shaded by old trees, Motael Church is both an architectural jewel and a sacred shrine of the resistance. Its intimate interior holds historic statues of Saint Anthony and a palpable sense of peace that belies its dramatic past.

First established around 1700, Motael served as Dili's primary cathedral for over two centuries. In October 1991, Timorese youths sought sanctuary inside against Indonesian intelligence agents; on October 28, soldiers stormed the church and killed activist Sebastião Gomes. His funeral procession two weeks later led directly to the Santa Cruz Massacre.
