Pertamina Pier / Cais da Pertamina

While its industrial backdrop might look unassuming from shore, beneath the surface Pertamina Pier is a wonderland of macro marine biodiversity. Shafts of sunlight pierce through the pier deck, illuminating pylon columns coated with vibrant sponges, tunicates, and anemones where some of the ocean’s rarest and most bizarre creatures make their home.

History

The story of this place

Constructed to offload commercial fuel ships into Dili, the steel and concrete pylons of Pertamina Pier have evolved over decades into an extraordinarily rich artificial reef habitat, attracting international underwater macro photographers and scientific researchers.
