At the northern tip of Atauro, Akrema feels like the ultimate castaway paradise. Blindingly white sands curve into turquoise shallows where the water is so clear boats seem to hover in midair. With virtually no development, visitors often have miles of coastline entirely to themselves.

The story of this place
Akrema has remained an untouched fishing outpost throughout Timor's history. The local community still practices traditional spear fishing and gleaning along the reef flats at low tide, coexisting harmoniously with the marine sanctuary.
