The story of this place
Construction began under Indonesian administration in 1984, funded in part by Jakarta in an attempt to placate the devoutly Catholic Timorese population. The cathedral was officially consecrated by Pope John Paul II on October 12, 1989 during his historic papal visit, which provided a massive morale boost to the independence movement.
